Illustrated and written by Mere Whaanga and translated in te reo Maori, this is the Ngai Tahu tale of the seven hills visible at Whakaki Lagoon, east of Wairoa, New Zealand that were once seven whales. Representations of the whales are incorporated into the maihi of the hap’s meeting house Te Poho o Tahu at Iwitea marae.
